SEND
Saltley Academy has a large Inclusion Department which is separated into two areas.
The Hive is our Mainstream SEND support for students who may have an EHCP or are SEN Support. We also have the Bridge which is a Resource Base for students who have an EHCP where Autism is named as their primary area of need. It is decided by the local authority which students are given a place in the Resource Base.
The Hive
Students who are identified within the mainstream school will benefit from interventions delivered by a team of Teaching Assistants either in small groups or 1:1 to help them to make progress in both literacy and numeracy. This is supported by an HLTA who oversees these interventions alongside the SENDCO and Assistant SENCo.
We also have an HLTA who is the lead for Autism within the mainstream and offers support and interventions for those with a diagnosis or on the pathway to a diagnosis.
Where necessary, we also involve advice and support from Birmingham City Council support services: Pupil and School Support, Communication and Autism Team, Sensory and Physical Impairment Support Services, and Educational Psychology Department.
The Bridge
Students who access The Bridge will already have an EHCP and a formal diagnosis of Autism. Through the interventions that take place in The Bridge, we aim to support students to access the mainstream school and lessons that are right for them. This is supported by a team of HLTAs and Teaching Assistants who oversee the day-to-day running of The Bridge alongside the SENDCO and Assistant SENCo/Resource Base Manager.
Where necessary, we also involve advice and support from Birmingham City Council support services: Pupil and School Support, Communication and Autism Team, Sensory and Physical Impairment Support Services and Educational Psychology Department.
At Saltley, we aim to be as fully inclusive as possible with all students having access to a full range of activities from in-school workshops to week-long residentials.
Saltley Academy is fully accessible to all students with a fully equipped hygiene room, changing facilities, lifts, lowered banisters, a base for charging powered wheelchairs, and much more, adjustments can be made where appropriate so all students can have complete access to a full and inclusive school environment.
