Drama

Drama plays a vital role in developing a child’s oracy and public speaking skills by engaging them in
relevant, real-world topics through fiction and nonfiction. Through performance, students learn to
understand their roles in society, gaining empathy for the characters they portray. They develop the
confidence to contribute to their communities by speaking about social issues.
Drama allows students to explore emotions, actions, and situations in a safe environment.

This processfosters escapism, enabling them to detach from their characters and reflect on both imaginative and reallife scenarios, learning valuable problem-solving skills. Students also learn about different theatrical styles and how to use space effectively for performance. Regular performances, along with peer and teacher feedback, help students find their own voices and advocate for others. Working with the Hippodrome Theatre, we expose students to both classic and contemporary plays, often attending live productions to give them a firsthand look at the drama industry.

As they progress into Key Stage 4, students focus on key areas such as Devising, Script Work, and a theorybased exam. They begin by independently exploring and responding to relevant themes through devising, then move on to portraying characters from established playwrights, adding their unique interpretations.
The theory exam assesses their understanding and growth from both practical and theoretical lessons. This
approach ensures students develop a well-rounded skill set, combining creativity, critical thinking, and
performance.
