Physical Education

Physical Education atSaltleyAcademy aims to encourage all students to actively engage in lifelong physical activity and maintain healthy lifestyle. The overall curriculum is designed to develop and stimulate the students; physically, socially and emotionally with student enjoyment being at its core. This is not only as a participant but in roles such as a leader, coach and official.

Leadership skills take a strong emphasis throughout all key stages. Students are given the opportunity to learn a range of physical activities through our broad and balanced curriculum. Whilst we support students going into an elite sport, the PE department at SaltleyAcademy aims to ensure that all students regardless of ability or needs have access to sporting opportunities to promote a lifelong participation in physical activity and leave school with the improved knowledge of how to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle and the importance of physical activity for their mental health.

This means that students in year 7, 8 and 9 will study a range of physical activities such as swimming, trampolining and dance, to more games-based activities such as netball, badminton, football and cricket. Students will develop physical sporting skills in these activities; enriched by an embedded focus on mental skills such as resilience, determination, and confidence.

As students progress into KS4 we are committed to further promoting life-long activity through students having more ownership of the activities they complete in their PE lesson. Students use the skills they have developed in KS3 to competently apply to competition. Students take greater responsibility for other roles, particularly officiating, further developing key life skills. Skills for new sports or activities are learnt and practiced then applied to competitive situations. Students will develop a greater understanding of the importance of physical activity to remain mentally well and how to use physical activity as a way of controlling and coping with stress.
