Student Expectations

These are the following expectations we expect from our students at Saltley Academy.

Behaviour

We have a well-developed system to encourage good behaviour and help students to learn positively from their mistakes.

The system is called ‘Behaviour for Learning’. It is easy for all students to understand and is consistently applied by all staff across the academy.

At Saltley, every member of our community strives to be: READY, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, REFLECTIVE — a clearly codified set of expectations that defines how we behave, learn, and interact as a community. These expectations are explicitly taught through our behaviour curriculum, ensuring students understand both the how and the why behind our routines and values.

Our shared expectations can be found here (please add a tab linking to the PDF titled Implementing Behaviour 2026).

Our expectations are introduced and reinforced through our whole school, Aspire, Support, Enforce approach. At key points throughout the year, staff explicitly communicate what success looks like, ensuring expectations are consistently modelled and practised. This helps every student feel confident, safe, and ready to achieve their best. Expectations are also shared with parents and during transition so that all members of the Saltley Academy Family have a clear and united understanding of how we work together.

To further embed our culture, Saltley Academy delivers a weekly Behaviour and Culture Assembly, supported by daily form time, to reinforce our Ready, Respect, Responsibility and Reflect values and the expectations that sit alongside them. This ensures our shared standards are consistently understood, lived and experienced across the school.

Students who make a significant positive contribution, demonstrate excellent effort or progress, or consistently meet our daily expectations are recognised through behaviour and academic merits. These achievements are logged on our school system and celebrated in assemblies, on our screens around the building and in our newsletters.

Simple and sensible expectations help us work harmoniously and achieve our best. Everyone is expected to show respect and consideration for others, demonstrate good manners, and be Saltley SMART in both appearance and demeanour.

Consequences When expectations are not met, Saltley Academy applies consequences clearly and consistently so that learning is protected and our values of Ready, Respect, Responsibility and Reflect are upheld.

C1 – Chance — A clear reminder of expectations, giving the student the opportunity to correct their behaviour.

C2 – Choice — A final warning that reinforces the student’s responsibility to make the right choice.

C3 – Consequence — A detention will be issued when behaviour does not improve following C1 and .

C4 – Removal from lesson — If behaviour continues to disrupt learning, the student may be moved to another classroom or to the Reflection Room/Space. Continued disruption at this stage may lead to an SLT detention or, in more serious or repeated cases, an internal or external suspension.

Parents and carers are informed by text message when a C3 or SLT detention is issued.

Reflective and Restorative Approach Alongside clear consequences, Saltley Academy is committed to a reflective and restorative approach to behaviour. When students reach a C3 Consequence or require removal from a lesson, they are given structured opportunities to reflect on their behaviour through our reflective curriculum and follow up conversations.

This approach:

-Supports understanding of the impact of actions

-Builds empathy and responsibility

-Promotes positive change and reduces repeat behaviours

-Ensures students feel supported rather than punished

Our reflective work explores themes such as respect, equality, relationships, personal responsibility, bullying, discrimination and peer conflict. This ensures behaviour is not only addressed but used as a meaningful learning opportunity.

Consistency Across Subjects To ensure consistency in every classroom, all faculties have codified behaviour expectations within their subjects. This means students are clear on:

-Key classroom routines

-How rewards are achieved

-Equipment expectations

-Homework expectations

-How and when consequences are applied

By clearly front loading these expectations, students are supported to be successful in every lesson and experience consistency across the academy.
